Seed Collection/Storage

Seed collecting costs nothing, and you’ll find you have plenty to share. April Moore explains what plants are suitable, the best time to harvest, how to separate the seed from plant debris, and also how to store seeds to keep them viable.

Gardener Extras

  1. Flowers that are great for seed saving include marigold, zinnia, poppy, snapdragon and sunflower.
  2. Great vegetables for beginning seed savers include beans, lettuce, peas, tomatoes and peppers.
  3. Be sure to protect collected seed from rodents. Glass or metal jars keep seeds safe and fairly airtight. Clear glass storage allows you to check for mold.
