Squash Woes

To avoid problems with growing squash, Jeff Poppen employs the principles of farming developed long ago. This includes an emphasis on soil drainage, and the liberal use of compost.

Gardener Extras

  1. Organic matter provides nutrients to bacteria, fungi, earthworms and other organisms in the soil which in turn makes those nutrients available to plant roots.
  2. The squash beetle feeds on squash, pumpkins, cucumbers, melons and gourds.
  3. A natural fungicide, horsetail tea is used to treat fungal problems, and it makes a magnesium rich spray that can be used as a soil feed.
