Tulip Time

At Lucky Ladd Farms in Eagleville, early spring means tulips, and lots of them. One million in fact. This taste of Holland in Tennessee is open for visitors to enjoy, and even pick a bouquet. Tammy Algood learns the culture, care, and exciting new colors of these flowering bulbs.

  1. Tulip Fire is caused by the fungus Botrytis tulipae, and it is evidenced by large blighted scorch areas on the leaves. This fungus can persist on debris and in the soil for a long period of time.
  2. The best time to pull or pick tulips is when they petals of the flower are just beginning to unfurl.
  3. A notable new hybrid is peony tulips. These have large, full flowers with multiple layers of petals, resembling peonies.
  4. Parrot tulips are known for their ruffled, twisted, and fringed petals that often have a striking mix of colors.
  5. 'Kunyun' Darwin hybrid tulip is popular for its beautiful pastel colors that change day by day
