Nepenthes

Nepenthes, or tropical pitcher plants, are carnivorous plants that have a prey-trapping mechanism featuring a deep cavity filled with digestive liquid. Surprisingly, they are pretty easy to grow. We’re at Red Leaf Exotics Nepenthes Nursery in Morrison Tennessee to learn about both species and hybrid specimens. Care and growing tips are also discussed.

  1. Nepenthes can be found in its natural habitat in the tropical regions of Asia - mainly Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore and New Guinea.
  2. Nepenthes have a 15-20 year life span, depending on surrounding conditions.
  3. Nepenthes require live insects or mild fertilizer to survive. One insect per pitcher is sufficient.
  4. Nepenthes do well in 70-80% humidity. Domonick suggests using a personal humidifier for just a few plants.
