Wetlands Garden

The Wetlands Garden at the UT Botanical Garden in Knoxville has been established in a low-lying area that once had been a difficult space to maintain. Now this area is working in harmony with nature. It features a series of ponds, plus a wide variety of native plants that together form a sustainable ecosystem that filters water and provides habitat for wildlife. Troy Marden tours the area and gains tips for homeowners who may have a situation on their property with water run-off and retention.

  1. Hydrology is the scientific study of water on Earth, including its movement, distribution and management. It also examines the properties of water and its relationship with the environment.
  2. Wetlands can filter water, removing up to 90% of sediments and pollutants from runoff and streamflow.
  3. Wetlands face a variety of threats including the drainage for agricultural production or urban development, invasion by exotic species, channelization and climate change.
  4. Lemnoideae (duckweed) grows quickly and produce new offshoots rapidly. Dense populations are an important food source for aquatic waterfowl and fish, but can become a nuisance for humans.
