To me, the garden is magical

Annette Shrader introduces us to a gardener who chooses to grow vegetables in raised beds. She began with 8, and it wasn’t long before she had more than doubled that. This garden is so charming, visitors love to linger.

MENTHA spicata (Spearmint)

Gardener Extras

  1. Spearmint repels mosquitoes, flies and spiders. As for Joeleen's chickens that ingest it, mint has a calming effect on laying hens. Also, mint naturally lowers body temperatures which can be helpful in keeping a flock cool in the summer.
  2. Tomato suckers are the growths that appear in the junction between the stem and a branch of a tomato plant (axil). Pruning tomato suckers increases air flow around the plant, reduces plant disease, and speeds fruit ripening.
