Fall vegetable garden pointers

Fall vegetable gardens require planning, especially if those plants are to be grown from seed. Calculating the days to maturity allows one to start seeds at the proper time. Host Annette Shrader visits an experienced grower to see how the cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and peas are performing mid-autumn.

Gardener Extras

  1. Vermiculite is a naturally occurring mineral. In garden soil or potting mix, vermiculite is aerating, moisture and nutrient-retentive, sterile, and has a neutral pH.
  2. Legumes play an important role in crop rotation. Grow corn one year, then follow up with a bean or pea crop the next year to restore nitrogen in the soil.
