Growing Lettuce in Fall

Lettuce is a cool-season crop, so it grows well in autumn. Tammy Algood checks out the beautiful rows of Salanova head lettuce at Red Thread Farm in Franklin TN. Here, they direct sow it in October. Its a cut and come again type that produces until the Persephone Period (when daylight falls below 10 hours/day).

  1. Salanova assortment comprises 5 different lettuce types: butterhead, oakleaf, lollo, crispy and Batavia. Salanova has 3 times more leaves than other lettuces. All of the leaves are small in size, similar to baby leaf.
  2. Persephone Period refers to the time of year when daylight falls below 10 hours per day. It reference the daughter of Demeter,, Goddess of Harvest in Greek mythology.
